What is Body Rolling?
Darina teaches a customized version of Yamuna Body Rolling (YBR), which is a whole‐body self‐care/movement practice using specially designed inflatable balls to facilitate movement, alignment, tension release and improved mobility. According to Yamuna, founder of YBR, “it is a whole-body method to relax muscles, tone your body and melt stress.”
Body Rolling
Yamuna Body Rolling (YBR) uses small balls of various sizes and firmness placed under different parts of the body, and the practitioner uses their body weight and movement over these balls to intentionally stimulate muscles, tendons, bones and fascia. This helps unwind tension, improve circulation, influence posture, restore pain-free range of motion and enhance overall body awareness.
Body Rolling enables the transversal and diagonal expansion of muscle fibers in order to move the body more dynamically. The method is not simply “roll atop a ball randomly” but incorporates structure: from muscle origin to insertion, aligning bone and muscle, creating traction, and engaging weight‐bearing in supported ways via the ball. In this way, we can engage all muscles in the body, from the face to the feet, sometimes focusing on overall mobility, sometimes focusing on detailed areas such as the shoulders, back, hips, or feet.
Benefits & Why People Use It
Physical Benefits:
The physical benefits of YBR include improved posture, greater flexibility and range of motion, relief of tight or restricted areas, and better alignment head to toe. The method also helps strengthen and tone the body, support joint health, prevent and heal injuries, and increase mobility. You’ll wind up feeling good in your body and being able to do more of the things you like to do.
Mental and Emotional Benefits:
Body rolling is fundamentally a somatic practice, which means a practice which focuses on internal awareness, slow mindful movement, increased presence, and emotional and physical integration. Darina invites you to slow down and truly listen to your body, noticing sensations, breath, tension, and emotions as they arise. Instead of pushing these sensations away, you’ll meet them with increased awareness, increasing the mind‐body connection.and inducing calm and reducing stress. Many people find that as the body unwinds, long-held stories, emotions, and patterns soften as well.
Overall:
In short, Darina gives you a toolkit to use on your body both independently or in classes, using balls to self-mobilize muscles and bones, promote structural alignment, and support movement quality and ease, while also giving you the tools to meet yourself with presence. This can support relief from chronic pain, and even stress-related conditions. Darina uses this method and a combination of other methods and experience to bring multiple benefits to her students.
